With a sudden boom in the IT industry and the internet revolution, computer has become an indispensable part of our life. Most professionals end up spending about 7-9 hours in front of the computer. This makes them more susceptible to eye-related problems.
A survey of Optometrists revealed that 10 million eye examinations are annually given in America because of the visual problems caused by the over use of the computer. Computer related eye-problems are now known as the Computer Vision Syndrome.
Symptoms
- Dry and Irritated Eyes – If you continue to stare at the computer for a long period without blinking much your eyes will dry up. Blinking keeps refreshing the tear layer on our eyes this helps to retain the moisture and maintain oxygen balance in our eyes.
- Blurred Vision – This might come as a result of a poor viewing angle, reflected glare or poor quality of your monitor.
- Eyestrain – It means a fatigued, tired, painful or irritable vision that may result because of the prolonged use of the computer.
- Light Sensitivity – This happens when the light is reflected from the monitor of your computer directly into your eyes causing discomfort.
- Double Vision – Due to the straining of your eye may lead to double vision. Double vision is a serious problem. Get your eyes examined if you suffer from double vision.
Treatment
- Get your eyes examined regularly if you use computer for more than 4 hours a day.
- Make sure your room doesn’t have light sources exactly behind you or directly in front of you.
- Install an anti glare screen on your monitor.
- Adjust the brightness of your computer screen to your comfort.
- Try to Blink often to keep your eyes lubricated and prevent them from drying. Every half an hour blink 10 times slowly.
- Take frequent 10 minute breaks to reduce eyestrain.
