People commonly suffer from drooping eyelids that gives an impression as if the person is sleepy and his eyes are half closed. This condition of drooping eye-lids is known as Ptosis.
What is Ptosis?
Ptosis the abnormal drooping of the upper eyelid. The eye-lid droops so that it covers more than 2 millimeters of cornea.
What causes Ptosis?
There is a muscle in the eyelid called the Levator Palpebrae. It is responsible for the elevating movement of the upper eyelid. When there is a defect in the muscle, it leads to Ptosis.
Types of Ptosis
There are basically two types of Ptosis, Congenital Ptosis and Acquired Ptosis.
Congenital Ptosis is present since childbirth. It is caused because of the lack of development of the levator muscle.
Acquired Ptosis results because of the loosening or detaching of the levator muscle.
Symptoms
Drooping Eyelids
In cases of congenital ptosis, you will often find children struggling to keep their eyelids open by raising their eye-brows.
You would find the same symptoms in Acquired Ptosis too. Some adults also complain of loss of vision in the upper field of eye.
Cure
Surgical correction is the only option one can have. Surgical correction has been able to get rid of Ptosis completely.
