Our eyes have an automatic lubricating mechanism. The Lachrymal glands secrete tears that lubricate our eyes and reduce friction between our eyelids and the cornea, thus keeping the conjunctiva soft and supple. When our eyes are exposed to the air , the tear film tends to dry but blinking keeps refreshing the eyes with new tears.

Dry eyes syndrome is caused when the eyes become dry and irritable because of the improper function of the lachrymal glands.
