As soon as you hear the word ‘Black Eye’ you might just remember that hard punch you must’ve got in one of your last brawls. The skin around your eye must’ve become black in color and made you look like a raccoon.
But have you ever thought why your eye became black? Well, after a hard blow or any injury the blood and other fluids tend to collect in the space around the eye resulting in swelling and discoloration.
Black Eye is not exactly an injury to the eye rather it is a bruise around the eye. Just like a black bruise any where on your body where blood collects.
It will take a few days for your black eye to heal. Once the swelling around your eye decreases, your bruise will fade away. First the discoloration will be very mild then it will become darker and gradually fade away from deep violet to green and then to normal. The swelling increases as the discoloration progresses. But once the discoloration starts fading, the swelling will also go away.
In most cases, there wont be any visual problems. But if the injury is severe then there may be a visual loss.
The other common symptoms that prevail with your black eye may be – loss of consciousness, inability to move the eye, blood on the surface of the eye, persistent headache, blood from the nose and double vision.
It is best to visit the doctor in case you have a black eye. He will examine your eyes carefully to see if the bruise has effected your eye or only the area around it.
