Conjunctivitis is a common communicable eye disease known as Pink eyes, Bloodshot eyes or Madras eyes. It is an inflammatory disease of thin, transparent protective covering of the eye known as Conjunctiva. Conjunctiva acts as the first protection to the eye from the infection. It contains a network of thin blood vessels which are also visible to naked eyes. Main function of conjunctiva is to secrete oil and mucous to keep the eyes moist.
Conjunctivitis may be caused as a result of bacterial or viral infection and even sometimes due to various allergens.
Common symptoms of conjunctivitis are
- Redness of the eyes
- Persistent itching
- Constant watering of the eyes
- Burning sensation
- Blurred vision accompanied by light sensitivity
It is transmitted as any communicable disease. It takes a form of epidemic during summer and spring season. Conjunctivitis can be easily cured. Antibiotics in the of form eye drops, pills or ointment are prescribed to treat the disease.
How to prevent the spread of conjunctivitis?
- Do not rub the infected eye with hand
- Always use a washed handkerchief to clean the infected eyes
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap
- Wash the affected eyes with luke warm water after regular intervals.
- Avoid using common articles like towels, glass etc.
- Avoid using eye make up during the infection
It is rightly said that “Prevention is better than cure”. There are various homeopathic eye drops and pills available in the market which may be used as preventive medicines. But consult a doctor before using such medicines. And if you find any of the symptoms above mentioned consult a doctor.
