Parents have to cope with Pink Eye (conjunctivitis) among children. Children have a red eye (pink eye). In this case the white of the eye (sclera) becomes red, and the eyelids also become red. It is more of a symptom, rather than a disease. It is contagious. Children can be exposed to it in schools and day care centers.
Symptoms of Pink Eye Among Children
- If caused due to bacteria, a green or yellow discharge is there
- The inside part of the eyelids will be red as well as the white part of the eye
- If caused due to allergies, known as allergic conjunctivitis, there is redness in the eyes as well as itchy sensation and tearing
- Allergic conjunctivitis also causes white discharge
- Corneal abrasion or scratched eye can result in pain, redness and tearing of the eye
Causes of Pink Eye Among Children
- Viral infection causes it
- Allergies
- Trauma
- Bacteria
Treatment of Pink Eye Among Children
- Breast milk is good. It is easier and cheaper
- Warm compresses or cool compresses for allergies can be used to clean the discharge
- Clean cotton balls should be used
- Eye drops available over the counter can be used
- Children should wash their eyes regularly and should not rub or touch the eyes
Conjunctivitis spreads fast. Children should be cautioned from being infected by other children. In day care centers and schools, children are often exposed to Pink Eye. Proper treatment should be given to children suffering from Pink Eye.
