Black eye is due to bleeding under the skin near the eye. It can also be caused due to an injury, including a skull fracture or a head injury. A black eye need not be serious. But if there is bleeding then it can be serious. It can affect the vision and cornea. It can also lead to tremendous pressure inside the eyeball (glaucoma). Often blows are exchanged between two people and one ends up with a black eye due to a blow inflicted upon him or her by the other person. It is an ugly sight. What does one do about it?
Causes of a Black Eye
- A blow to the nose causes swelling in both the eyes
- Surgical procedures such as facelift, nose surgery or jaw surgery can cause a black eye
- Some types of head injuries can also cause swelling in the eyes
- Allergic reactions, skin infection near the eye, bites also cause a black eye
Symptoms of Black Eye
- Discoloration and swelling
- The skin near the eye turns yellow, violet, black or green in color
- Swelling increases along with the discoloration
- Over a period of time the area becomes lighter and the swelling decreases

Cure For a Black Eye
- One can apply a cold pack or place a cloth filled with ice upon it. Do apply pressure upon the eye. Apply them immediately after the injury. Use these packs for 24 to 48 hours
- There should not be any blood inside the colored and white parts of the eye
- One must seek immediate medical attention in case the vision gets affected, like blurred vision or double vision. One must also consult if there is severe pain in the eye or the nose. source:
Having a black eye may be socially embarrassing. Most people think you had a fight and lost to the victim. Much discomfort is caused due to it. Aesthetically also, it is not a nice thing to suffer from. It is not a serious injury, but may require medical attention if bleeding occurs.
