Our eyes have an automatic lubricating mechanism. The Lachrymal glands secrete tears that lubricate our eyes and reduce friction between our eyelids and the cornea, thus keeping the conjunctiva soft and supple. When our eyes are exposed to the air , the tear film tends to dry but blinking keeps refreshing the eyes with new tears.

Dry eyes syndrome is caused when the eyes become dry and irritable because of the improper function of the lachrymal glands.

Causes
In many cases the causes could be aging or hereditary.
Sometimes prolonged use of Television or computer also leads to dry eyes because while staring at the computer screen and television, people tend to blink lesser than usual.
Hot and dry climate also contributes to the drying of eyes.
In rare cases dry eyes may also be caused by Sjoren’s syndrome. It is an autoimmune disorder that dries up eyes and mouth.
