Diabetic retinopathy is a condition caused due to uncontrollable diabetes or high blood sugar. The severity of diabetic retinopathy is related to the extent to which sugar level is high or low.

The retina is a light sensitive area that has a rich supply of blood vessels, and damage to the retina is caused when due to high sugar levels, blood vessels become weak.

Also, due to the weakness blood and fluid in the blood vessels tend to leak out into the retina. And even though new blood cells are created they are not very efficient in supplying oxygen and blood to the eye.

Thus depriving the essential nutrients from the retina, causing vision loss and blindness.
