Why Contact Lenses Should’nt Be Worn While Sleeping At Night

Posted on November 8, 2008 in Latest News

Contact lenses though very comfortable, do have their pros and cons. Contact lenses should especially not be worn while sleeping. This is a very important precaution that one should take, but very few follow this instruction. Taking short naps with contact lenses can also prove to be a major threat.

Reasons They Shouldn’t Be Worn:

If worn it could cause a lot of danger and risk to the eyes.

This is because the eyes need oxygen supply and when lenses are worn they cut the oxygen supply, which the eyes receive when they are open. This leads to accumulation of bacteria on the eyes and can be very dangerous and can also lead to blindness.

Germs can accumulate on the stressed cornea and will lead to blindness.  Also, the contact lenses tend to get stuck on the eyeball, as the eyes tend to dart front and back during sleep. Sometimes they also tend to tear away.

Repeatedly sleeping in contacts can lead to accumulation to calcium on the cornea, which can lead to blurring of vision.

It is therefore very important that you remove your lens and sleep in the night.
