If a foreign object enters your eyes, it tends to cause lot of discomfort, irritation and pain. Also, it does not let us sit in peace and makes us very restless, causing us to rub and fidget with our eyes.
However rubbing and scratching the eye with an effort to remove the foreign particle can prove to be very dangerous. Letting the foreign particle stay in the eyes can also prove to be very harmful. Here are some potential threats.
- Infection and scarring in the Eye- A foreign body left in the eye tends to cause immediate infection and scarring. This is because the metal reacts with the eyes natural tears and tends to form rust. This is seen as a black spot on the eye and leave scars and affect vision permanently
- Corneal scratches or abrasions – Constantly rubbing the eyes may cause the object to rub against the cornea. This may leave scratches on the cornea and affect vision again. In some cases problems may occur even years after the original injury.
- Ulcer – Scratches on the cornea don’t heal at times causing a ulcer to develop. This can affect vision again.
- Corneal scarring – When severe they cause some degree of permanent visual loss.
- Penetration of the eye –Sometimes due to our own mishandling an object can enter more deeper into the eye, causing more damage..
Therefore, it is very important that one be very careful in handling a foreign object that enters the eye.
