Dry Eyes is a syndrome caused due to lack of lubrication and moisture content in the eyes. Tears are used to keep the eyes moist and lubricated. It also prevents debris from being accumulated in the eyes and also helps fight the bacteria in the eyes.
Absence of tears creates the problem of dry eyes, creating a burning and scratchy sensation in the eyes.
Also, sometimes you get a feeling of as if something is present in your eyes. This further triggers of the tears gland causing excess tear production. This results in watery eyes.
Causes:
· Dry eye syndrome is caused either due to lack of tear production or either due to the absence of a chemical that prevents the eye from drying.
· It is also caused as a reaction against intake of certain medicines.
· It occurs as a sign of aging process.
· Occurs in women as a sign of menopause.
· Living in a dry and dusty climate.
· Staring at the computer for long.
· Staying in air conditioning for long.
· Dry eyes can also be caused due to using contact lenses often.
· The eye is made up of different layers and a problem with any of these layers causes dry eyes.
· Surgery of the eyelids called “blepharoplasty” is another cause of dry eyes. As one is unable to close the eyes properly.
· Smoking also increases one’s risk for developing dry eyes.
