Red spots, often blood when seen in the eye happen due to a condition called Hyphema. Hyphema occurs when blood leaks into the aqueous chamber of the eye, which is very visible and observable by another. This condition also leads to decreased vision.
Causes
- Hyphema may occur due to surgical procedures, for e.g. eye operations.
- Hyphema may also occur when one is involved in a fight and has had a blow hit on the face.
- It may also occur due to an injury to the eye caused due to a flying object.
Symptoms
Here are some signs that will help you identify whether or not you are suffering from Hyphema.
Redness In The Eye: Blood in the form of bright red spots, may indicate the condition of Hyphema.
Decreased Vision: If vision is found to be reduced after the appearance of blood spots on the eye, then it is a clear indication of Hyphema.
Elevated Eye Pressure: The blood spots may increase pressure in the eye leading to a condition called glaucoma.
It is very important that one take care of their eyes, if the blood spots are persistent for a really long time, then one should consult an eye doctor immediately.
Details of the injury should be clearly mentioned. The doctor then resorts to the following procedures of
Testing Visual Acuity
Measuring Intraocular Pressure
Examination of the eye with a slit lamp microscope and ophthalmoscope.
Also sedation and rest is advised. In severe cases hospitalization may be advised in order to surgically drain out the blood from the eyes.
If proper care is not taken, it may lead to permanent damage of eyes.
