A Sty is a painful pimple like structure that occurs on the upper or lower part of the eyelid. They are harmless and rarely affect your sight. They can occur at any age and may appear at any part of the eyelid.
Sties usually occur on the outside of the eyelid but they also have a tendency to occur on the inner part of the eyelid.
Sties are caused due to bacteria called staphylococcal bacteria. A Sty is caused when one of the eyelid glands is infected with these bacteria.
The difference between a sty that occurs internally and a sty that occurs externally is that a sty on the eyelash grows out into a painful pimple and wears away as the infection declines.
A Sty that occurs internally in the eyelid, swells up and like the external pimple wears away as the infection passes out.
Causes of A Sty
A Sty is caused due to several reasons
1) Frequent accumulation of dust in the eyes.
2) Improper use of eye make up
3) Blurred Vision
4) Dandruff in the hair may fall on the eyelashes and also lead to sties.
Treatment
A sty if not meddled with gradually passes away with time. Fidgeting and trying to burst the sty may lead to an infection. Doctors at times prescribe eye ointments and eye drops, which can prove to be very helpful.
In some cases when the sty leaves out a cyst, an operation has to be performed in order to drain out the cyst.
If the occurrence of sties is persistent, one needs to consult an eye doctor immediately and do the required action as advised.
