Headache behind the eyes can be due to a variety of problems. This can arise when cornea and lens fail to work together to focus images properly on the retina. This can put extra pressure on the eye muscles lead to problems such as hyperopia, cluster headache, astigmatism or presbyopia. Sometimes sinus migraine, retinal migraine, opthalmoplegic migraine, etc can also lead to headache behind eyes. Whatever the cause, the end result is intense one-sided pain (most often) behind or around the area of the eye.
Causes of Headache behind Eyes
- Astigmatism: Due to irregular shape of the cornea, an object can look blurry when seen from a particular angle. This can make people to squint thereby putting extra pressure on the eye muscles. If prolonged, too much pressure can lead to eyestrain and headache behind the eyes.
- Hyperopia or Long Sightedness: This particular eye disorder is caused when instead of focusing the image directly on the retina, the image is focused behind the eyes. This can cause weakening of eye muscles, thereby leading to headache behind the eyes.
- Presbyopia: With age, there is gradual loss in the ability to focus on nearby object. This is caused by progressive loss in elasticity of the crystalline lens, thereby leading to headache behind the eyes.
- Opthalmoplegic Migraine: This type of migraine puts tremendous pressure on the eyes and lasts for few days to few months. Delay in treatment can exert too much pressure on the optic nerves, thereby worsening the condition.
- Retinal Migraine: This type of migraine can put too much pressure on the eyes and lead to temporary, partial or complete failure in vision.
- Sinus Migraine: Sinusitis can be the cause of sinus migraine. Pain is usually felt behind the eyes, cheeks and along the nose.
Proper treatment of the eyes along with healthy diet can provide relief from headache behind the eyes.
