Ocular migraines or eye migraines are the severe headaches which are accompanied by disturbances in the vision. If the defects in vision are also there along with headaches then the term ocular or ophthalmic is attached to the migraine.
Migraines are usually produced due to the neurological responses of the body which triggers certain hormonal changes or chemicals present in foods or medicines. Once these are triggered it may result in severe headache which if not treated could remain there for several hours.
During this process of migraine, the flow of blood is also affected or changed. If this change affects that area which is responsible for vision then it could produce vision related problems.
Symptoms Of Ocular Migraine:
The symptoms of ocular migraine can be summarized in the following points:
- A small blind spot which enlarges slowly in the central vision.
- This blind spot in the central vision will have flickering bright lights, or zig – zag shimmering light inside it.
- The blind spot will enlarge and will move all around the field of vision.
- Sometimes detachment of the retina can also be noticed.
- Eye twitching
- Temporary or partial blindness
- Vertigo
- Dizziness
Causes Of Ocular Migraine:
The causes of ocular migraine can be:
- Stress
- Premenstrual changes
- Consumption of alcohol in large amount
- Fasting for long hours without consuming much food
- Use of contraceptive pills can also result in migraine in certain people
- Certain foods like red wine, old cheese, chocolates, chicken livers, meats which are preserved in nitrates can also cause migraine.
Ocular migraine can also result in basilar migraines which is an advanced stage of ocular migraine.
