Double vision of the eyes is resulted when the two eyes are misaligned and aim at different targets these two non matching images are sent to the viewer’s brain. In case the brain accepts and uses two non – matching images at the same time, double vision comes in.
This is a dangerous situation, so in order to avoid double vision the brain ignores one of the images and accepts just one. This is called suppression of one eye.
Double Eye Vision In One Eye:
Diplopia or double vision can be caused in one eye or in both the eyes. Monocular Diplopia or double vision in one eye can be caused due to various reasons. Some of these are:
- Abnormal curvature of the cornea’s front surface.
- When cornea tapers to a cone shape.
- When the lining of the eyelids gets thickened.
- When the white portion of the eyes gets thickened.
- Cataracts can also result in double vision
- If the ligament that holds the lens gets broken it could result in double vision.
- If the eyelid is inflamed.
- Dry eyes could also cause double eye vision.
- If the retina is not completely smooth then also double vision is caused.
Double Vision In Both The Eyes:
The causes of Binocular Diplopia are different from Monocular Diplopia. There causes are:
- If something goes wrong in the muscles which are surrounding the eyeball could result in double vision in both the eyes.
- The muscles around the eyeball could face problems due to the misalignment of the eyes since childhood, any kind of nerve damage, diabetes, myasthenia gravis, Grave’s disease, and trauma to the eyes.
