Equine Eye Infection

Eye infections and injuries are very common in animals like Horses. And, if not treated on time, it can get very nasty. Even the smallest of the smallest problem if left untreated, can lead to blindness. At times, if a serious infection or injusry is not attended to immediately, the eye structure can be eroded and finally collapse. If proper care and treatment is done, the infection or the injury will subside soon.

A healthy horse eyes should be bright and clear, the lids should be tight, moist and pale pink from inside. The tearing at the corner of the eye should be minimal with only 1 droplet.

The most common equine eye infection are:


Immediate treatment is required when:

There is swelling of the lid.

If the eyelid is torn or cut.

Any small eye injury.

Any kind of tumors growing on the lid.

Any kind of discharge from the eye.

If continuous tears flowing down the horses face.

How to prevent Eye injuries:

The environment surrounding the Horse, should be free from dust as much as possible. Be sure to cover up all the sharp edges of the pipes, water troughs, metal buildings etc. Make sure there are no old nails protruding from the fences or any other structures.
Some injuries are unavoidable. They are caused when horses play or scrap. Make the horse’s stable a safe place to live in.
