If the surgery has to be done both lower and upper eyelid then the surgeon will first work on your upper eyelid. How Under Eye Surgery Is Performed?
Under eye surgery is generally performed by using local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. A numbing medication is injected in your eyelid, and to relax you surgeon would administer intravenous medications. You would feel groggy but will not be able to sleep.
Depending upon the location and amount of tissue has to be removed generally the surgery is finished within 1-3 hours. Nurses and the hospital staff would monitor you for complication while you are resting in the recovery room. Later the day you can leave for home to recover.
What Happens After Under Eye Surgery?
The most common symptom after under eye surgery is blurred vision. Blurred vision is caused because of using the ointment for protecting and lubricating your eyes. Immediately after the surgery, you may experience double vision, light sensitivity and excessive tearing. In addition to the above conditions you may also experience numbness or puffiness in your eyelids. Discoloration and swelling slightly similar to black eyes can be expected after the surgery. After the surgery, your incisions would be clearly visible and red.
Aftercare of Under Eye Surgery
Here are few precautions you need to follow for at least 1 week post-surgery.
Try and avoid lifting heavy articles more than 20 pounds.
Avoid bending your waist unless you are bending your knees.
Avoid swimming.
Avoid laborious physical activities like jogging or aerobics.
Excessive neck movements should be avoided.
While sleeping remember, that your head should be raised higher than your chest.
It may take around 3-6 months for the scars to fade. Protect your operated eyelid from sun exposure during the healing of the scars. For most of the people results after under eye surgery are permanent but in cases reoccurrence of drooping eyelids may take place.
Risks of Under Eye Surgery
Like any other surgery under eye surgery also involves some risks like
Reaction or infection to the local anesthesia
Short-term numbness of the eyelid skin
Irritated and dry eyes
Impaired functioning of the eyelid
Scarring
Due to bleeding behind the eyes there are light chances of blindness
